Gender analysis of political discourse: comparative aspect (on examples of speeches of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris)

Abstract

In the field of political linguistics, there is active development in analyzing the gender aspect of political speeches. The importance of this topic lies in the lack of existing works on comparing the gender-specific aspects of political discourse. The author provides a definition and highlights the key specifics of political discourse as a linguistic term. The article presents research results based on the analysis of 8 speeches delivered by current US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The goal is to identify and analyze linguistic elements that represent feminine and masculine traits. The prevalence of masculine markers in the speeches of both politicians can be attributed to the influence of contemporary gender trends on political speech.

У сфері політичної лінгвістики активно розвивається аналіз гендерного аспекту політичних промов. Актуальність цієї теми полягає у відсутності робіт, присвячених порівнянню гендерних аспектів політичного дискурсу. Автор надає визначення та висвітлює ключові особливості політичного дискурсу як лінгвістичного терміну. У статті представлено результати дослідження на основі аналізу 8 промов, виголошених чинним президентом США Джо Байденом та віце-президентом Камалою Гарріс. Мета - виявити та проаналізувати мовні елементи, що репрезентують фемінні та маскулінні риси. Переважання маскулінних маркерів у промовах обох політиків можна пояснити впливом сучасних гендерних тенденцій на політичне мовлення.
