Відтворення неологізмів у романі О.С. Забужко "Музей покинутих секретів" в англійському перекладі

Abstract

In this article we focus our attention on one of the best postmodern Ukrainian novels authored by O. Zabuzhko ―The Museum of Abandoned Secrets‖ and its English translation done by N. Shevchuk-Murray. In particular, the research priority is given to the author‘s neologisms, which are often regarded as occasionalisms, and their English translations. The language of the novel under research proves to be colourful, multifaceted and emotionally saturated, which has found its reflection in adequate English translation. Thus, it was revealed that there are different ways of adjectives-occasionalisms formation in the novel, for instance: two stems of adjectives, connected with suffix -o-, stems of nouns and adjectives with suffixal connection, two adjectives compound word formation, adverb plus adjective/participle word formation model. Occasionalisms in the English translation were properly rendered either by following the author‘s strategy or by using a closer to the English reader variant, simplifying the form but preserving the sense and connotation of the source text.
