Typical mistakes in English translations of research paper abstracts

Abstract

The paper draws attention to the common lexical and grammatical errors in abstracts to research articles translated from Ukrainian into English. Most of such errors result from literal translation of the original text without proper regard for essential differences in Ukrainian and English academic registers. The common lexical mistakes include misuse of words, choice of the wrong match in the target language, confusion of paronyms, etc. Among the most typical grammar mistakes are the wrong use of articles and prepositions, wrong collocation, copying Ukrainian syntactic structures in English, and sexist language manifested in the use of pronouns and nouns.

У статті розглядаються лексичні та граматичні помилки, які є типовими для перекладів анотацій до наукових статей з української мови англійською. Більшість таких помилок є результатом буквального перекладу, який не враховує суттєві відмінності між українським та англійським науковим мовленням.
