| dc.description | This study is devoted to analyzing Ukrainian and Russian translations of famous novels by Mark Twain, The adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. One of the features these novels are special for is that they use African American Vernacular that causes many problems for the translator. For our research we chose Ukrainian and Russian interpretations translated by U. Koretskyi, I. Steshenko, V. Mytrofanov, I. Bazylanska, N. Daruzes, K. Chukovskyi. The diachronic plurality of translations of M. Twain’s novels will explore how the individual translators approached the speech of each character. Mark Twain’s highest strength is probably in his attention to speech detail of each character. The author has a clear goal: to create the image of each character (Huck, Jim, Tom, The King and The Duke) with the help of grammatical features of African American Vernacular. The main grammatical features that are used in both texts are: the long lists of nouns or adjectives connected with “and”, “or”; redundancy of subjects; the use of “them“ as a determiner; verbs do not always agree with their respective subjects in number and person; tense shifting; the use of past participles in place of past simple forms; the use of nonstandard preterits; no signaling of the 3rd person singular of the verbs “do” and “be’; the use of the forms “ain’t”, “hain’t” and “warn’t”; the use of “a-“ prefix; the use of participle “done” in place of “did”; the use of the verb “to do” in the form of “does” in all persons; the use of the verb “to be” in both present and past tenses; zero copula; the use of multiple negation; subject/verb disagreement. The way of decoding the language of each character characterizes by using artificial syntax, particles, dialect vocabulary, literary language, reduced forms and verbal interjections. As a matter of conclusion we can state that some translators seem to ignore the author’s idea and translate the speech of the characters as Standard English, though we admit that they partially preserve the social belonging of the characters. | uk_UA |
