The Proof of the Pudding Is in the Eating or Pudding as a Translation Problem

The paper draws attention to the translation problems caused by a wide range of semantic reference of the English word ‗pudding‘, which is an important element of the British gastronomic discourse. The authors look into the history of the word to understand its original reference, make a list of the most common names of puddings, grouping them into categories according to the mode of preparation, provide their available Ukrainian translations and, in case there is no translation available or the existing one is not adequate, offer their translations.

The article provides some observation and guidance on how to make the texts of the source language and the target language commensurate and proportional in size. This requirement is often neglected in teaching translation although it contributes largely to the quality and adequacy of translation. Translated texts may tend to expand and shrink with respect to the original but the degree of shrinkage and extension must not be arbitrary or unreasonable.
Language Deviations and Translation

The article provides linguistic information about the language norm and the definition of ‗language deviation‘. Translators and interpreters have to deal with language deviations expressed in public speeches by prominent policy-makers and public figures, and they have to know how to avoid (if necessary) and how to render these deviations in the target text. Generalized ideas are presented of how to translate the parasite-words into Russian.

The material under study in this paper is represented by social varieties of the language. Territorial varieties, jargons, colloquial style, social stratification are shown in the language as the signs that need to be detected by the interpreter for proper rendering.

The article focuses on the findings of the Russian Formalist organization OPOIAZ in relation to the further development of translation studies as a discipline in the Soviet Union and beyond. OPOIAZ‘s studies of form and function of literary works influenced the contemporary translation practice, as well as gave substantial material for the research of such globally renowned scholars as Roman Jakobson and Andrei Fedorov, who is now recognized as the founder of the Soviet translation studies. Despite the political pressures against formalism, the legacy of OPOIAZ continued to inspire further generations of scholars, contributing to the emerging discipline of translation studies.

The article studies the expressive means, contained in the inaugural addresses by the American presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump, at the lexical and stylistic levels. Particular attention is paid to the ways of their translation into the Ukrainian language. The translator does not simply convey a language medium with the help of another language medium, in fact, they convey the function of the original language unit by choosing the equivalent that performs a similar function in the language of translation.

The article reveals the author‘s vision of how to teach English grammar. The main idea is that, firstly, students should be taught the essence of a grammar phenomenon; they are supposed to understand the inner form of it. This methodological idea is considered on the basis of the grammatical theme ―The Article‖. It is illustrated how students learn the meaning of articles with the help of an educational dialogue and problem tables, then build microgrammar rules and use them in practice. The teacher only directs their activity. This approach helps students to guess the meaning of countable and uncountable nouns and consequently be a success in oral speech and translation.

The given article deals with the analysis of contemporary teaching technologies used for the development of students‘ skills and abilities in versatile types of translation and interpretation at the university level from the point of view of the range of assessment procedures involved. The need in thorough elaboration and implementation of appropriate not only heterobut self- and peer-assessment tools and techniques has been substantiated due to the analysis of assessment role in a prospective philologist‘s professional development and activity. The discrepancy between the mentioned above need and lack of such techniques and tools in modern students‘ university training has been revealed. Some prospective empirically verified ways and instruments for their accomplishment have been singled out and reviewed.

The paper is devoted to the approach to understanding common features represented in both interpreting and translating Japanese slang. The relevance of the paper is due to the growing interest not only in interpretation of the units of youth slang and the featured options represented in media, but also in researching in the realms of cultureoriented linguistics, intracultural communication and practical translation. The object is the field of problems relating to the process of translating Japanese slang. Using the methods of theoretical and empirical perception, an attempt to highlight the main characteristics observed during the process of translation was made.

Hemingway and their Ukrainian translations. It is emphasized that the pragmatic influence of rhetoric questions is provoked by E. Hemingway‘s cinematic language, which creates a specific emotional and sensual context.

Інтерсеміотична та мовленнєва когезія в субтитрованому перекладі українського фільму

The article considers intersemiotic and speech cohesion in the English subtitled translation of the Ukrainian film ―The Stronghold‖. The paper analyses the means of intersemiotic cohesion on the textual, interpersonal and ideational levels. The conducted research allows us to conclude that intersemiotic cohesion in subtitles on the text level occurs due to nonverbal instruments, namely: frame structure, graphic and punctuation marks as well as some verbal instruments (indicative pronouns, adverbs of place, articles). Intersemiotic cohesion on the interpersonal level is achieved through visual means of the film. The ideational level is characterized by logical links achieved by synonymy, antonymy, reference, substitution, ellipsis, and omission. Speech cohesion occurs due to the repetitions of language units of the same thematic group.

The article also discusses the types of exercises for teaching translation and identifies the ways to achieve translation equivalence in the translation of technical texts into Russian.

The article considers the category of condition by means of studying the peculiarities of conditional sentences functioning through time continuum. The research outlines the communicative functions of conditional sentences of the novels ―Pride and Prejudice‖ by Jane Austen and ―Me Before You‖ by Jojo Moyes as representatives of English classical and modern literature and their Ukrainian translations made by Hanna Leliv and Nadiia Khaietska in the comparative aspect. In this regard conditional sentences act as means of information exchange that perform certain functions. In the paper it is proposed to distinguish the following communicative functions of conditional sentences of the novels: warning, threat, causality, thoughtforming, apology, assumption, instruction demand, and promise
