Item Pragma-communicative aspect of the Queen Elizabeth II speech on the coronavirus problems, 05.04.2020(Херсонський державний університет, 2020) Гуменюк, Наталія Григорівна; Humeniuk, Natalia HryhorivnaThe following work is devoted to problems of the Queen Elizabeth II coronavirus discourse pragmatic features. The Queen Elizabeth II coronavirus discourse is defined in the given work as a special address of Queen Elizabeth II to the nation – the UK and the Commonwealth realm citizens – on the urgent problems of the coronavirus pandemic. The given address is the fifth special address of Queen Elizabeth II to the nation during her 68-year reign. It is stressed that the given discourse is organized by Queen Elizabeth II with the purpose to support the people at the challenging time of coronavirus, to calm them down, to explain the situation and to direct them to be strong, patient and supportive to each other, to be united as a nation to overcome the problems of the coronavirus disease. It is pointed out that extra-linguistic factors of the addressor’s dress color, of the addressor’s manners, of the situation layout, of the video and photo materials usage, of the image plan are used to realize the purposes of the Queen Elizabeth II coronavirus discourse. It is stated that with the strategic argumentative purpose the Queen Elizabeth II coronavirus discourse is characterized by usage of the argumentative technique, the manipulative techniques of story-telling and of the deictic fields usage. It is stressed that a system of valid arguments of Her Majesty and Her strong belief in overcoming the coronavirus pandemic makes the people of the UK and Commonwealth realm believe the same idea. The given investigation is fulfilled with the help of several methods: method of simple calculation, discourse analysis method, method of immediate constituents, pure sampling and comparative method. The Boris Johnsons’ first speech as a Prime Minister of the UK is defined in the investigation as the political institutional discourse. It is assumed that Boris Johnsons uses different techniques of addressee influence with the orientation to the diverse audience. It is stressed that the technique choice greatly depends on the type of addressee: immediate communicator or potential communicator. The results of given research state that Boris Johnsons uses manipulative, argumentative, confronting, cooperative, storytelling as part of manipulative and calling to act techniques. It is pointed out that argumentative technique is realized in Boris Johnsons’ speech through the usage of the argumentative blocks of information appealing to real facts, universal and national values, as well as the usage of parallel constructions and emphatic sentences. The manipulative technique is stated to be realized with the help of deictic field manipulative mechanisms. The storytelling is defined as part of manipulative technique with its separation into heroes and enemies. The confronting technique within the first Boris Johnsons’ speech as a Prime Minister of the UK is assumed to be slight confrontation with some warning to the opponents of Brexit. It is underlined that the Queen Elizabeth II coronavirus message has narrative structure: introduction, main body and end. The first speech of Boris Johnsons is defined as political, institutional, ideological discourse to promote the idea of Brexit among the population of the UK as the most relevant idea for the given community. It is stated that all the language inventory in the form of Stylistic devices and Expressive means used within the Boris Johnsons’ first speech as a Prime Minister of the UK serves to influence the addressee to accept the idea of Brexit as the only one way for the better life in the UK. It is stressed that the author of message uses a great number of epithets to show the benefits of Brexit. Metaphors used in the message are considered not only to appeal to the feelings, emotions of the addressee, but to provoke thinking about the described objects, subjects and phenomena. It is underlined that parallel constructions in the form of anaphora and epiphora within the speech of Boris Johnsons are able to make the information more stressed and valuable. Parenthetic sentences and detachments used in the message are determined as means to give some additional information, some arguments for Brexit, as well as means to express Boris Johnsons’ attitude to the described events and facts. The Question Time of the UK Prime Minister discourse is defined in the given work as subtype of a parliamentary debates discourse with the global strategic purpose to gain and retain power in the country, which is realized through the immediate strategic purposes and by the certain tactics and techniques usage. The discrediting opponent tactics within the Question Time of the UK Prime Minister discourse is determined by the opposition "the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnsons and Opposition MPs with Jeremy Corbyn at the head" and is defined in our work as a communicator actions set to diminish the valuable essence of the leader / member of the opposite, competitive party or of the party as a whole. It is proposed to differentiate the individual and collective opponent. The discrediting tactics within the given discourse are proposed to be grouped and classified into: discrediting tactics dealing with the opponent negative features based on the opponent system of values; discrediting tactics referring also to the self-presenting tactics; insulting technique. The tactics number used by the UK Prime Minister and Opposition MPs to discredit each other differs. It is stated that the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnsons uses a tactics set to discredit the opposite Labour Party with Jeremy Corbyn at the head: "Opponent is a coward" tactics, "Opponent is a criminal" tactics; the discrediting insulting tactics, comparison technique, benefits tactics. It is stressed that the Opposition MPs with Jeremy Corbyn at the head uses a set of discrediting tactics to discredit the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnsons and his Conservative Party: "Opponent is a liar" tactics; "Opponent is non-professional, “incompetent one" tactics; comparison technique.
